Introduction: I have two sons Sean and Sjoerd, 27 and 16 years, a husband Cham, a dog (Skori) and 2 cats (Snuggles and James). We live in Gulpen, one of the most touristic villages in the beautiful South of the “hilly” Netherlands. I like baking a lot and I like eating what I baked (maybe a little bit too much😅) Actually, I really like food in general. Memories about whatever always involve the presence of food, the smell of food or the taste of food😆 My biggest hobby is drumming. Since October 2024, I have been playing drums in a band, a brass band, and I am looking to start my own (pop/rock) band |
Research topics: For more than 10 years now, I have been doing research within the broader theme of technology-enhanced learning. This includes research into how people learn with technology, what barriers they encounter and how they can be supported in this. More specifically, my main focus was on topics such as intention-behaviour, (peer) feedback, motivation, cognitive load, growth mindset and emotions in the context of individual and collaborative learning. The topic of my dissertation was about learning in MOOCS – title: Mind The Gap. Unravelling learner success and behaviour in Massive Open Online Courses |
Current research interest: For about a year now, I have been working mainly on the topic of AI in education. myself, Myself as one of the early adopters within my own work; as supervisor of PHD projects focused on LLM-based pedagogical agents/teacher assistants (emotion regulation emotions in group learning/ conditions of use for GenAI PAs and their effects on learning outcomes in higher online education/) and supervisor of master thesis students focusing on AI literacy and writing skills as a researcher I’m currently setting up several experiments with my course team in our own (academic writing) course for instance: 1) comparing teacher assessment with AI assessment, 2) AI-tooling and student motivation (autonomy & competence) You could say that I am developing my own research line focusing on AI-assisted learning and teaching support. |
Tips & tricks: When writing an article for submission, don’t aim for perfection because that is generally a waste of your time and energy. Aim for a solid well written version that adheres to the author guidelines and that you feel generally good about, and then let the reviewers have their way (because they will, also when you think you submitted a “perfect” version…) |
